Drowning in the Rain

Blazing through a road; a path of destination, Mr U. browsed through the forecast of the day’s weather and met with the absolute shocker that all his plans may be stifled by the downpour as he suffered from an unusual phobia. From all the phobias imaginable, ranging from those for clowns, to those of the dark, he was more afraid of his dream, yes, his dream. Now he faced, being slowed down by rain. Yes, rain. Bigger than just water drops, bigger than the wetness of his clothes, bigger than the physical drag. The impending screams of thunder claps for the strike of a Bolt of lightning flashing at unavoidable speed through to the finish line breaking yet another pun record.

As the last number of Olympians battle out for who the gods of various sporting adventures would be with their silver and bronze clad demi-god counterparts as the copper, tin, and wood winning Olympians make their bid to be gods amongst men known, there’s a realisation. As much as we would all probably love to be royalty, there’s a role for everyone to play as the rains of life fall on us all.

The mountains we beg to move sometimes are simply the hills that keep others from being beneath sea level, deprived of oxygen in forms their lungs can process. The true storms we face don’t come from the ground beneath us, or from the neighbourhood of which our contemporaries reside… They fall from the heavens we look to for hope. Where we place our dreams are the benchmarks for which our headaches and nightmares are to surpass, simply The bigger the dream the greater the corresponding nightmare and thus the greater the storms that the heavens flush down upon us.

Where do your dreams end? How far are you willing to go before you wake up from your dream and give up on the idea because the storms coming at you are too “great”? Our level of greatness stems not from the ability to avoid storms or to steer clear of a challenge wherever we sense it, predict it or plainly are thrown into it head first by the schemes of life but, by our ability and dared doggedness to dive into the wavy unsettled waters of envisioned opportunity against the heavy winds of obstruction and all the obstacles no matter their magnitude having in mind that the sharks are coming…(Have no doubt, they’re coming).

Blinded by the amount of struggle required to make the hurdles in the track to achieving our dreams and ambitions we most times succumb to clouding our minds with other things to quiet down the noise in our heads of the great task ahead that we may even swear we are no match for. It’s okay to be a little afraid because if your dreams don’t take you aback a bit then you are still not staring at your true dreams yet. Once asleep It is possible to have  a dream about your dream while trying hard to dream of something else because deep in your subconscious you are fed up with pretending you don’t want them. The problem with suppressants like chugging on behind a bottle of alcohol or taking off on a hill of drug abuse to achieve a level of high that takes you low enough so you never have to see beyond the mountain because you are too busy picking stones and walking funny at the bottom. The bottom is a nice place to be when you are there, lounging, soaking in the sights and sounds of the fake life that holds no true attachment to your dreams or potentials tied to your vision.

More than fear your dreams will stay shackled to you till your dying breath as you watch your life in a timeline of movie clips like a trailer to a box office thriller, only that this time you know the movie too well to pretend it’s your first time seeing it. Regret creeps in like a cat on all fours wearing socks because you seem to never see it coming but it meows all over the room so you can’t ignore it as it comes to land the final blow. Having lived a life in a safe zone where everything went your way and you never had to push any doors open, never had to train day and night, meditate day and night on your course of sail, enjoying the thrill of thrilless water where you can lazy through it all with your hands off the steering and know that by your nature you would be on course, all the while dreading the day you dare wander into the coordinates of circumstance that is your dream.

It rains ever so lightly and Mr U. Stares above to watch the now labouring clouds heavy with the child of precipitation and evaporation. It’s going to rain soon and to achieve his dream he is going to stay in this rain and race against time; his biggest rival and competition. He’s on his mark ready and set to go, and shortly before he bolts off he remembers a time he felt he was too slow for this kind of race, a time he thought he could lounge in the lanes of a slower pace where his long strides could by nature take care of his slow starts and pamper his breathing with cushions to his time never having to meet the demands for the dream he has now fought to achieve… The crowds of the world cheering unaware of his deep personal battles and times he swore it was too much while trying to pull the trigger on the entire operation. Knowing his weaknesses and acknowledging the possibilities of starting slow, he focuses on believing that once he is up on his two feet and in his stride he is the fastest and strongest in his race. The Gatlin gun goes off and he does too, stride after stride, arms pumping up and down as he catches the entire field in front of him but undeterred and filled with belief in himself he finds he floats through them all and his dream suddenly stops being a nightmare, he wins.

Don’t go the distance for something you have no faith in simply because it seemingly has worked once without effort, don’t lose hope in dreams or  abandon them for an unfulfilled second place in a life of no satisfaction. Find your uncharted waters and set sail else you live a life of ever impending regret. You are what you believe in… Stronger or weaker, it’s your faith that makes you indeed stronger, so believe in you and make your storms give way to your dreams because just above those clouds is your true fulfilment.

Live life, love life, and live Laughing.
